Tom Lantos finally does something good.

He died.

Tom Lantos might be remembered by some people as being a Democratic representative from the state of California. Some may know him as a professor of economics, and others know him as “the only holocaust survivor to serve in congress.” We remember Lantos as a pathological liar who advocated the murder of civilians.

This might seems like a harsh claim to be leveled at someone who served his country (as a politician) for 26 years but the facts are there.

Lantos claims to be born on Budapest, Hungary in 1928.  He often claims that he fought in the underground against the Nazi’s. This can be disproven with simple math.  The Germans invaded Hungary in the summer of 1944, Lantos would have been 16 years old. He then claims to have escaped twice from the Camps which he would have only been in for a period of 6 months (the camps were liberated in the winter of 1945).  He then came to the United States at age 19 and recieved his Phd in economic at the age of 25 (I call bullshit).

These experience gave Lantos, as he often said, “moral authority” in Congress. Boy oh boy did he use “moral” authority. One of his first acts of morality was to lie to the world in order to go to war. 

Her name was “Nurse Nayirah“, she was a Kuwaiti girl who Lantos brought before Congress to testify that she had witnessed Iraqi soldiers throwing infants to the ground and leaving them to die after going through a hospital.  All of this was done anonymously to protect the “witness.” The problem was that the witness was the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the United States and she had connections to a public relations firm that represented “citizens for a free kuwait.”  This is now seen as all being war propaganda although Lantos claimed it all to be true all the way to his death.

When the idea of Iraq came up ten years later Lantos was one of the first to grab a gun and get in line behind the propaganda machine.  It would take him 4 years of watching civilians die while searching for nonexistant “weapons of mass destruction” before he would finally admit his mistake. He quickly moved on to more war mongering, this time in Lebanon and Syria. 

In August of 2006 Lantos declared that he would block all foreign aid going to Lebanon unless they promised to send troups to the Syrian border. Lebanon has just been bombed by Israel and over 1000 Lebanese civilians were in the words of Lantos, “Collateral damage.”

Lantos tried to salvage his moral authority by protesting the Sudanese government, he did so by actually protesting instead of using his political power in congress. Besides showing how ingenuine his support for the people of Darfur was he also showed his track record for discriminating against Arabs.

During a 1996 Congressional inquiry into “filegate” Lantos insinuated to a witness that he should commit suicide like another higher ranking officer. In 2007 he called German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder a “political prostitute” during a commemeration for the Victims of Communism Memorial.  And lastly in 2007 he told Duth parliament members that they had to assist in the War on Terror because the United States had liberated them in WWII and added that Guantanamo was getting more attention in Europe than Auschwitz ever did.

It is only in the United States that a penniless survivor of the Holocaust and a fighter in the anti-Nazi underground could have received an education, raised a family and had the privilege of serving the last three decades of his life as a member of Congress,” Lantos said upon announcing his retirement last month. “I will never be able to express fully my profoundly felt gratitude to this great country.

A penniless survivor (who did not speak english) would not be able to enroll in college and get a Phd in 6 years. And again, for him to have fought the Nazi’s he would have had to pick up a gun at age 12 and fight until Hungary was invaded when he was 16. The truth is that Tom Lantos has lied about all things in his life. He lied about his past, he lied about the first invasion of Iraq, he lied about the second invasion of Iraq and he lied about everything in between.

Thank you for inviting me to be here today. Before I begin, I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Representative Tom Lantos. I did not know Congressman Lantos, but I have learned about him in preparation for my appearance before this Committee. I understand that he was a Holocaust survivor and that he lived a life full of courage, conviction and accomplishment. I know that his passing is a heartfelt loss to this Committee and our country.
